After buying a 400 year old farmhouse near Oxted, the client pulled back the tired carpets to find water-damaged chipboard. Forced to choose between replacing the floorboards or laying down new carpet, they visited our showroom in Sevenoaks where we discussed their available options. Hudson Flooring then went on to install a stunning new wood flooring, in keeping with the charm of their beautiful home.
"Given the nature of the house, with irregular shaped rooms and floors misshapen through age, Hudson Flooring brought along their installer to make sure they were confident they could deliver a result in keeping with its age and character."
Why were you looking for a new flooring?
When we bought our 400 year old farmhouse near Oxted, the carpets were very old and tired, and needed to be replaced. We assumed that the floorboards underneath would be original, and intended to expose these throughout the house. However, when we pulled back the carpets, we found the floors were made of chipboard, which in several places showed signs of water damage, so were forced to decide between replacing the floors, or putting down new carpets. As we had been living in Sevenoaks, we were aware of Hudson Flooring’s shop, so decided to go in and discuss our options.
How did the Hudson Flooring staff help?
Hudson’s shop staff were excellent, professionally explaining our options and showing us samples without once making us feel they were pressuring for a sale. Without any commitment on our behalf, they were happy to lend us samples of wood and carpet to look at in the house, and to send their project manager, Neil, to look at the house and help advise us. Given the nature of the house, with irregular shaped rooms and floors misshapen through age, Hudson brought along their installer to make sure they were confident they could deliver a result in keeping with its age and character. They also arranged for me to visit the manufacturer of the wood to see the full range of options available and to ask any questions. Only when we, and they, felt fully confident did they provide a quotation, which was very much in line with what we had expected based on our research.
How did you find the installation process?
We had a two month window between completing the purchase and moving in, and had several contractors working on site to get things ready. Only a week or so in, our electrician delivered the bad news that we would need to fully rewire the house. Neil was able to replan the project to meet the new timelines, and ended up coordinating between the various projects we had ongoing – in effect acting as an overall project manager for the house. Despite the sheer amount of work going on, we were able to move in on time, albeit with some of the flooring still to be laid. Hudson’s installer was with us for several weeks after moving in, enabling us to see the quality of his work and professionalism in person. He did a fantastic job, with our pre-distressed boards looking as if they had been in the house forever – bending with the beams, and fitting into every nook and cranny. Despite the dust inherent in sawing wood, he somehow managed to keep the house almost spotless, and his workplace very tidy.
Would you recommend Hudson Flooring?
Hudson delivered an excellent result, on time despite difficult circumstances, and on budget. Neil and the installer were fantastic, always professional, and always flexible, responsive and helpful. I would have no hesitation in recommending Hudson Flooring to anyone who wants a wonderful wooden floor at a reasonable price.
